Reading Time: 2 minutes

Fitness is one of those things that we all know we should be doing.

We know that we are stewards of a body God gave us…

We know taking care of it requires exercise, eating right, rest, movement, etc…

But why can’t consistency just come naturally?

I want to share 3 of the main roadblocks to consistency, and then some things that have helped me stay consistent with fitness.

#1 – No clarity

When we say things like “I want to exercise more”, “I want to eat healthy”, “I want to move more”, “I want to sleep more”, we are being too vague.

Instead, be as specific as possible about two things:

  • What you want to do

  • Why you want to accomplish it

Be thoughtful about this. Here are some examples:

  • Exercise: I want to spend 30 minutes exercising 3x a week at home with kettlebells so that I can build strength to play with my kids and help family/friends move things around the house

  • Nutrition: I want to eat at least 100g of protein each day within a caloric deficit so that I can lose weight and so that I will feel energized instead of sluggish

  • Movement: I want to get 9,000 steps each day so that I can lose weight, not feel as lethargic throughout the day, and move the body God gave me

  • Sleep: I want to get 7.5 hours of sleep every night so that I can have mental clarity to do my job/responsibilities better

#2 – No plan

Now that there’s clarity, the next question is what is going to help me accomplish the objective?

What plan am I going to follow that’s aligned with my goal and purpose?

There are tons of resources out there for exercise, nutrition, movement, and sleep. Here are some of mine:

#3 – No accountability

Now that there’s clarity and a plan… the next question is what happens on days you don’t feel like it?

Because if we’re honest, those days happen regularly.

And when enough of those days are strung together, that’s exactly how inconsistency takes root.

Accountability from others helps you stay on track. Here are some ways you can do this:

  • Spouse

  • Siblings

  • Friends

  • Church

  • Like-minded community

And pro-tip… make sure accountability also has clarity and a plan. If it doesn’t, it tends to fizzle out.

Hope this serves.
